What we do

Camp Wyandot, in the beautiful Hocking Hills, has been reuniting children with nature since 1928 with a unique spin on the traditional summer camp model. We operate week long sleep-away programs for kids entering grades 2-12. We focus on small group living and group decision making, spending virtually all of our time in the great outdoors swimming, canoeing, doing arts and crafts, cooking over an open fire and exploring nature on several hundred acres of rolling forests. Our focus is on developing caring confident leaders who have an appreciation for the call of a bullfrog, a starry night, and all the wonders of our natural world. Camp Wyandot creates memories which will be treasured for a lifetime!

Why we’re unique

Camp Wyandot is tucked in alongside of Clear Creek Metro Park, deep in a valley in the Hocking Hills region about an hour south of Columbus, Ohio. It is in a unique location, known as one of the most bio-diverse regions on the planet. Our camp hosts a variety of habitats, including deciduous and evergreen forests, meadows, a lake, streams, and one of the clearest creeks in the state with over 40 different species of fish inhabiting its waters. Giant hemlocks, brought by the glaciers, provide shade and humidity for the abundance of ferns, wild flowers, and creatures of all types. Within our forests are some stunning geological lena1formations carved over the millennia from the famous Black Hand sandstone that rises into the Appalachian Mountains.

This is our playground and our focus is to go play! To ignite curiosity in our natural world and to develop caring confident youth with a life-long appreciation for nature. We’re pretty simple here… no fancy electronics or bouncy things in our lake, just a beautiful valley to explore and be a kid!

Why it’s important

Today, more than any other time in history, our kids need to go outside to play on a jungle gym of fallen trees. Nature does not pressure our kids to perform; there are no standardized tests, no rushing about, and no staring at endless digital images piped in from someone else’s imagination. There is simply the KermitWcampersjoy of living in its purest form. Kids are interdependent with the natural world, yet know relatively little about it through direct experience. Losing our connection with nature is unhealthy and unnecessary. At Camp Wyandot we develop our natural senses and provide an intimate connection with nature; proven over the millennia to be critical to the health and well being of humans, and just as critical to the health and well being of humans today.

We also provide an intimate connection with what makes us human; the ability to share emotions and form deep friendships. We work at developing our “inner senses” as well; an awareness of our personal strengths and weaknesses and our place in the world. We strive to improve our ability to “read” others in a group, make appropriate choices regarding our behavior, and work together to accomplish great things.
