Mission
Camp Otonwe provides a wonderful opportunity for children currently in grades 1 – 8 to experience the joy of nature in a fun and safe environment. We focus on building outdoor living skills and developing a greater sense of self reliance. Campers will master new skills, try new things, and develop deep
friendships. We value diversity, open -heartedness, and environmental sustainability and strive to instill these values in our campers.
Program
Camp Otonwe uses the unit, AKA small group, model which involves similarly aged campers and their adult counselors, working together to plan their upcoming week as a family. Activities may include fishing, creeking, arts and crafts, nature hikes, cook – outs and much more. Of course the highlight of the week for our campers is the “Super Swim”, days where campers get to enjoy splashing about in a professionally guarded pool. Campers also love the unique guests and special programs, which occur once a week.
For Campers in grades 8 and above
Camp Otonwe Weal Program
Camp Fire’s motto is GIVE SERVICE. “Weal” is the Native American word for helper. This leadership program is open to youth that have previous camping and outdoor experience or those that have the desire to learn those skills. If you have completed seventh grade, enjoy working with children, possess a positive attitude and want to give back to the community, then this program may be for you. Training will consist of at least one day the week before session 1. The program consists of 3 tracks: Outdoor Skills, Leadership, and Community Service. Teens will receive programming in all three areas and will have the opportunity to concentrate on one or more areas during the summer. This is an excellent way to earn community service hours for school and gain experience for the CIT program at Camp Wyandot. Candidates for this program are selected through an application process which includes recomendations from a teacher and a family friend. Space is limited to 15 teens per week.
THEMES
Each session has a theme… we’re not going to tell you which session has which theme…… the surprise is half the fun, so you’ll never know what crazy theme will be taking place! However, here is what you can expect for 2010!
