Camp Fire USA’s Centennial Celebration – Register now!

The keystone event of our 2010 Centennial calendar will take place on
Saturday, July 31, 2010,
when Camp Fire USA will mark its 100th anniversary
at Centennial Campfires held across the country.

This is meant to not only be a Camp Fire USA event, but a community-wide event open to everyone currently involved in Camp Fire, our esteemed alumni across the nation and the interested public. It’s our opportunity to celebrate the promise of continuing a legacy that has left an indelible mark on millions of alumni and hundreds of communities.

This official national event will feature a special lighting of commemorative campfires at precisely 7:30 p.m. in each time zone.

Our central Ohio Celebration will include a great day of fun at Camp Wyandot. Come down to camp beginning at 2:00 pm and enjoy the pool and Lake Atagahi. We will play and have fun until dinner at 5:00pm. We will sing in the dining hall and then get ready for council fire. We will line up by decades and process the council fire ring. Those that can’t make it up the hill will be transported.

Fire lighting will happen at 7:30pm in all time zones across the country. Don’t miss being part of this historical event as we celebrate 100 years of WoHeLo.  Please register on-line here so we know how people we will need to feed. Donations will be accepted for dinner.  If you need a ride to the event, please call Nikki Spretnak at 614-488-8860.

Join us as we celebrate 100 years of Camp Fire’s History and Heritage

Help us fill 100 tables with our Camp Fire friends and alumni. We take a journey back in time to remember all the fun we have had being part of Camp Fire and more importantly we will set the stage for our next 100 years. Camp Fire is needed as much or more for today’s kids as we work to get them connected to nature and each other through the many programs that we offer in our community.

This is our fundraising luncheon. We do not charge for the lunch, but we will be asking you make a contribution to the organization. Because this is such a monument us occasion for us, our goal is to raise $100,000 to set the stage for the next 100 years.  It is our mission to inspire you to want to give to help secure our ability to continue to “Build Caring Confident Youth and Future Leaders” as we work toward our vision of “Reuniting Children and Nature”.

We want to fill 100 tables for our event and to do that we will need your help. Are you connected to your Camp Fire friends? Maybe you were CIT’s together at Wyandot, or WEALS at Otonwe or were in a club together. Gather your friends and create a table, each table holds 8. If you are looking for your Camp Fire friends, a good place to find them is on Face Book. We have 2 pages and many people are on both pages. There is Camp Wyandot page and Camp Fire USA Central Ohio Page. Use the search bar on Face Book and both pages will come right up. If you are not on Face Book we encourage you to join, it is a great way to find and stay connected with long lost friends. If you have not connected with others from Camp Fire come and join us anyway, surely there will be people at the luncheon that you will know. Please register now for the luncheon so that we can build the momentum…other will want to know that you are attending( with your permission)

Camp Wyandot and Camp Otonwe to host children in need.

Camp Fire received at GO! grant from Franklin County to serve low income kids at Camp Otonwe at Highbanks this summer. The children will attend Camp Otonwe Day Camp for 8 week and Wyandot for one week. We will be able to serve 30 children with this grant this summer.

We will be serving the children from the Gladden Community House at Wyandot again this summer thanks to the generous support of the Columbus Youth Foundation. Thirty children in grades 3 – 10 will attend Wyandot and the K- 2 graders came to Wyandot for a day of tree and track identification and canoeing. Thanks to Clear Creek metro park ranger Marty Schull for sharing his knowledge of trees and tracks with the children. It was a great day at Wyandot. We are looking forward to their teens coming down and running Halloween In The Hills this fall.

Welcome new Camp Wyandot Camp Director!

Camp Wyandot welcomes our new camp director Daniel Juarez, or Zen as we know him at camp. Zen has worked for Camp Fire for almost a year and a half. He is our Child Care Administrator for our afterschool programs and was the site director at Camp Otonwe at Tuttle Park last summer. Prior to working for Camp Fire, Zen worked at the YMCA in California. He holds a recreation and leisure degree from The Ohio State University. We are excited to have Zen at the helm at Wyandot this summer. Please give him our warm Camp Fire welcome to the world of Wyandot.

Council announces Environmental Vision Statement

The following statement was crafted by a committee of volunteers and approved by the Board of Directors:

ENVIRONMENTAL VISION STATEMENT

Camp Fire USA – Central Ohio Council is committed to “Reuniting children and nature”.  In that endeavor the council is dedicated to enhancing, enriching, and promoting stewardship of the lands, waters, and air under its jurisdiction.  Through the efforts of awareness, communication, and education it also desires to extend its reach into the environment in which its clients live, work, and play.  This meets one of the core values of Camp Fire USA – to respect and celebrate nature.

In the Summer 2010, Camp Fire USA Central Ohio Council will extend its journey toward a program of reducing, reusing, and recycling.  A key to any successful environmental plan is the commitment and involvement of its people…staff, campers, and volunteers.

Action steps are:

REDUCE

Choosing products with minimal packaging to reduce waste

Identifying products and practices to reduce waste toxicity

REUSE

Promoting use of reusable products – example water bottles

Maintaining and repairing durable products

Reusing bags, containers, and other items

Borrowing, renting, or sharing items used infrequently

RECYCLE

Choosing recyclable products

Selecting products made from recycled materials

Disposing of paper, glass, metal, plastic, cardboard in properly marked recycling containers

Separate fruit and vegetable scraps from other waste in the kitchen for compost

Additional steps on the journey:

Place recycling containers at designated sites throughout camp

Transfer deposited items to a central location on a regular basis

Identify individuals responsible for taking items to a recycling center

Identify individuals responsible for removing the fruit and vegetable scraps from the kitchen to a composting location

Identify individuals to maintain the compost area

Select and purchase locally grown unprocessed food whenever possible

Inspect shore around the lake and remove potentially hazardous and toxic items

Use only non-toxic materials when building and replenishing fires

As well as:

Replace old toilets with dual flush models

Invest in rechargeable batteries

Continue the purchasing and use of fluorescent lights or LED light bulbs whenever possible
